Catching up

September 7, 2013

Tropicbird, along with our two new Spaniard friends who joined the boat in Riung, are sailing towards Labuan Bajo, the major stop for all Sail Komodo.  We have spent the last week or so (I can't event tell you what day it is, let alone traveling times) stopping along at small towns and uninhabited islands to anchor and snorkel and join in Sail Komodo events.  Hopefully we will find wifi when we anchor today to get this baby online!

IMG 3886The small town of Marokpot - mud stilt houses.  The best night anchorage yet . . . the phosphorescent in the water at night was so bright we went night snorkeling!

IMG 3887We made friends with the local sofa maker, who invited us in for drinks. I am telling you  . . . celebrities!!!

IMG 3893Albino water buffalo . . . who knew???

IMG 3897So I basically get stung on a daily basis. Yeah laugh it up Sean. Jerk!  One day there were so many jelly fish I was able to catch two as pets!  Meet Jilly and Joe.

IMG 3917Omar and I outside our favorite restaurant in Riung, Cafe Del Mar.

IMG 3904So I thought they were using cotton to weave here . . . turns out the fluff comes from these giant pods on trees.

IMG 3908Any idea what type of tree?

IMG 3958The flying fox bat colony outside Riung - 2,000 plus bats!

IMG 3947They are the world's biggest bat species!

IMG 4005After the bats we went to the 17 Islands Marine Reserve for a day of snorkeling and relaxing on white sand beaches.

IMG 4065Back to Riung for dances that evening, all put on by the local elementary school.

IMG 4077Traditional and not so much . . .

IMG 4083No radio . . . no problem!

IMG 4098Our tour for the day to the traditional village of Rendu Tutubhada.  The locals actually cried when us Sail Komodo folks left!!!

IMG 4100Omar and I in the head hut with the town elders - the Mister is 98 years old and his hot (blind) trophy wife - 89 years old.

IMG 4101The traditional village of Boawea.  Not the greatest living room for vegans.

IMG 4104The most amazing rice ever . . . bamboo rice!  White rice cooked with coconut meat, garlic and ginger inside a bamboo stem over a fire.

IMG 4110I took some personal cooking lessons.

IMG 4115Omar and I with the traditional dancers of Boawea before heading back to Riung.
