The Air Asia experience

This post is just for my dad. He loves this stuff.

IMG 1533
Here is our plane that we would fly from Phuket to Chiang Mai.

IMG 1534
Here is an Air Asia stewardess greeting us at the airport.

This is a budget airline. Want lunch, pay up. Peanuts, those cost money too! Notice the ads in the overhead bins, they encourage you to prepay your lunch and extra luggage online where it is cheaper than the airport! So next time you get those Southwest Airline peanuts for free make sure you appreciate them. Hope you enjoyed flying with Air Asia.
Love U Dad!

Chiang Mai Fun

December 29, 2013

It has been nonstop fun since arriving in Chiang Mai with new activities everyday.  We came to this city to relax and take a break from the craziness that traveling is, but with all the amazing things to do in this city I think we are actually busier now than before and I have a giant To Do list!

IMG 6466Here’s Wendy and I visiting our first Buddhist Temple of many here in the Old City of Chiang Mai.

IMG 6471Nothing like cruising the streets for fun in a tuk tuk.

IMG 6475I love this tuk tuk driver! - he put on a Santa hat and blared Michael Jackson tunes.  Not to mention he squished 4 of us into his tuk tuk - 3 in back and me upfront holding on for dear life.

IMG 6476Our home made Christmas tree - complete with presents from Santa.

IMG 6482It was a wonderful Christmas morning spent with good company, Christmas carols, and thoughtful presents.

IMG 6489Imagine my delight walking around the city and running into three Mr. Tourisms.

IMG 6493We are getting into shape the Thai way - Muay Thai Boxing with a professional fighter, Per.

IMG 6533We all came home with bruises littering our feet and shins.

IMG 6557My Crossfit muscles aren’t completely gone.

IMG 6592That little kid could kick any of our butts . . . and probably all at once if he wanted.

IMG 6594The fruit and vegetable markets here are farm fresh.  We visited one while on our cooking class.

IMG 6600Then we visited the farm to learn about the vegis and start our cooking class.  This was our incredibly funny and flamboyant instructor, A.

IMG 6606We each had our own woks and chopping stations as we were each making 6 different dishes!  I made spicy basil tofu, papaya salad, fried bananas, Tom Sab soup, red curry paste and red curry.

IMG 6609The best part of class!

IMG 6614Wendy and I at the farm!

IMG 6673Now that we are officially Muay Thai students - we had to go to a professional fight.  A championship fight no less.

IMG 6690And the champion?!?!?!  Why it’s Per - our very own instructor!  I don’t know if watching him fight motivated me or has terrified me.  All I know is when he yells at me to hit faster or drop and give him 20 I won’t be pissing him off.

Diving in the Similan Islands

While exploring Phuket we friended a local that hooked us up with some great diving deals. I have payed more for lunch at the Ale house than for a dive here. The Similan Islands are a world renown diving site and one of the top ten diving sites according to National Geographic so we had to go.

From Phuket we took a speed boat to the Similan Islands to begin our diving adventure. This is one of the many beautiful anchorages we spent the night at.

Eat, dive, sleep. The schedule was grueling. Doing 11 dives in three days is tough even if done in a beautiful setting with a private chef and taking naps inbetween.

The trip was so great that Wendy decided to get a tat to remember the moment.

I wish I had more pictures of the beautiful marine life I found while diving. Sorry, I don't have a dive camera. However this fellow came to visit the boat and say hi, just so I would have a picture of marine life!

The beautiful sunset provided relaxation from our busy schedule.

Heading back to Phuket we took a speedboat. The seas were choppy so here is a crew member demonstrating how to prevent motion sickness. I hope that is all clear to you. Of course none of the sea hardened Tropicbird crew got any sea sickness.

Our last night on Phuket we had a street night market. Yes, it is a street full of Asians shopping. I swear it is not San Jose.

The Island of Phuket

We arrived at Phuket and left our home away from home Tropicbird. We stayed in Old Town Phuket were we knew it would be quieter and rented scooters to go explore the island.

PC180072
Big Buddha overlooks the whole island of Phuket and is a great scooter ride to visit.

PC180063
Ali got a blessing by a Buddhist monk.

PC160018
We spent the rest of our time walking around Old Phuket Town away from the tourist crowds and finding gems like these.

PC170022
Maybe do a bike tour of Thailand?

PC150011
They just keep things in service around here.

PC170029
A cute Thai family on a scooter. Who needs an SUV?

IMG 1478
We went to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Center where they take rescue gibbons and try to release them into the wild. If you visit Thailand please do not support illegal gibbon trade by taking your picture with one of them at the tourist traps.

Old Phuket Town

December 22, 2013

I can’t believe we worried about how to spend a week in Phuket!!!  Time has never gone by so quickly between walking around the charming Old Town of Phuket, exploring the island on scooters, and a three day/two night diving trip splurge to the Similan Islands - one of the world’s top ten dive spots according to National Geographic!

IMG 6345So sad - our final goodbye with Captain and Tropicbird - our home away from home.

IMG 6349The charming Old Phuket Town.

IMG 6360There are still plenty of mansions around town from tin mining tycoons.

IMG 6434The town is certainly colorful if nothing else.

IMG 6346And a goodbye dinner with the crew - half us are off diving and the other half are off rock climbing.

IMG 6354I think I am going to like Thailand!

IMG 6355I, of course, made everyone visit the Vegetarian Temple in Phuket.  There are red, wooden blocks (in my hands) that one can throw on the ground to receive answers to all of your life questions.  Vegetarian God says keep traveling!

IMG 6358And then of course we had to eat at the local vegetarian restaurant, conveniently located near the temple.  That’s the owner looking thrilled to pose with us!

IMG 6376Giant Buddah - over 45 meters tall.  Each marble square you are seeing is 12” square tile.

IMG 6387 The Thailand pigeon. . . only they don’t poop on your head.

IMG 6391Another night market with the original food truck . . . err food scooter. All these stands are attached to a scooter.  Look closely and you can see the wheels.

IMG 6417Wendy and I outside the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket.

IMG 6421A lovely volunteer explained to us how the gibbons were extinct in Phuket in the early 1980’s, but thanks to the center now has 6 family units back in the wild with more on their way!!

IMG 6425Please don’t kill my family and steal me as a baby and keep me as a pet and make me pose for photos.

IMG 6442The Similan Islands!

IMG 6448Life on the boat is tough.

IMG 6453Getting ready for another one of our 11 dives.

IMG 6454Dive Team 1!  Love the instructor dressed in orange - super easy to find him 90 feet below!
