Lord of the Riung

We spent a few days in the Riung area. What started as a quick stop with no plans to stay longer than a night turned into four days of adventures and meeting our new Spanish crew mates. This part of the Flores Island is so remote that there was no internet cafe's, locals don't know what WiFi is and the cell towers would stop working at random times. Talk about being off the beaten path.

After anchoring on Monkey Beach we went walking on the village of Mbarungekeli.

The locals were very friendly, got us a drink and invited us to their homes. The whole family came out to see us go to the boat.

The family graves in Indonesia are very elaborate. Located sometimes in the front yard of a house, they are more elaborate and better constructed than the principal houses themselves.

We went on a tour to go see the flying fox bats and do a bit of snorkeling.

They have red faces and are they are the biggest bat species.

That was our ride for the day. Beautiful white sandy beaches, pretty fishes and good company. My life is tough.

The local school participated at the folkloric dance for the gala dinner in Riung.

More dancers at the gala dinner.

This is the traditional village of Rendu Tutubhada. They received us warmly with breakfast and folkloric dances.

Who needs HMOs? The village elder is 98 years old and still reads, writes and invites nosy tourists to the hut he built himself.

Then we were taken to the traditional village of Boawae. There we had more ceremonies, dances and lunch. We all sat in the porch of the biggest hut for lunch with the village elders.

This Inerie volcano provided the backdrop of our trip around Riung. We are definitely on the ring of fire!
